Washington, DC: While expressing confidence on a breakthrough in the second round of negotiations with Iran to end the hostilities, US president Donald Trump placed notable emphasis on restraining Israel’s military actions as part of a broader ceasefire effort.
Speaking to news outlet Axios, Trump expressed confidence that negotiations with Iran could soon result in an agreement, potentially within days. While discussions are said to be progressing toward a draft framework, unresolved issues remain. The US president indicated that he had been directly engaged in recent communications with Iranian officials and believed a meeting was imminent.
However, alongside optimism about diplomacy, the Republican leader made his stance on Israel’s ongoing operations clear. Referring to recent strikes, including a drone attack in southern Lebanon, he said Israel must halt its military campaign, as reported by News18.
“Israel has to stop. They can’t continue to blow buildings up. I am not gonna allow it,” he stated, underlining his expectation that Israeli actions should align with the ceasefire announced earlier.
Trump framed the potential agreement with Iran as beneficial for Israel’s long-term security. “Israel is going to come out great” at the end of the conflict, he said, suggesting that a diplomatic resolution would ultimately serve Israeli interests.
Measures such as limits on Iran’s nuclear programme and financial concessions are among the proposals under discussion, though specifics remain under negotiation. Trump also reiterated that key strategic concerns, including maintaining open access through the Strait of Hormuz, would not be compromised before a final agreement.
Despite Trump’s push for de-escalation, divisions persist within Israel’s leadership, where some officials are said to favour continuing military operations in both Iran and Lebanon, the report mentioned.
