Capital Hospital Sees Over 100 Burn Cases On Diwali; Fire Mishaps Mar Celebration Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar received over a hundred people with burn injuries on Diwali night (November 12)

A special team was formed to deal with such cases. “Many children, men and even women have sustained burns in mishaps during Dilwali celebrations. They are being treated by a special team of doctors and paramedics,” said an official of the hospital.

As many as 17 fire mishaps were reported across the city.

According to sources, more than 125 people were injured in fire incidents during Diwali celebrations in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Similar reports have trickled in from other parts of the state as well.

Sambalpur

Fire broke out at two places in Khetrajpur area of Sambalpur city. A fire incident was reported at a gunny godown and another on the third floor of a residential building on Sunday night.

A fire broke out at the third floor of Shyama Vatika in Sambalpur’s Khetrajpur area after a stray Diwali rocket ended up inside the apartment. Luckily, the apartment was empty.

“We received the information at around 10.30 pm. The fire broke out on the third floor & we have controlled the fire now. A gunny godown also caught fire and the teams reached the sit & doused off the fire. No injury has been reported.…,” Assistant Fire Officer, Sambalpur, Jitendra Kumar Biswal told ANI.

Nuapada

A house at Santoshimandirpada, Sinapali, in Nuapada was gutted following a fire cracker explosion during Diwali. The house belonged to one Zamir Khan, a businessman dealing with mattresses. The cotton stocked in the house further aggravated the fire. Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot to douse the flames but by then almost everything in the house was reduced to ashes.

“We were at the shop. My children were at home and playing with firecrackers when the mishap took place. By the time we reached home, almost everything was charred. I have nothing left in my house,” said Zamir Khan.

A 12-year-old boy sustained critical injuries in a mishap while bursting firecrackers at Bhela village in the district around 6 pm.

“The boy was bursting crackers by putting them in a steel glass, which flew under the impact of the collision and hit the boy causing deep injuries on his head,” said a villager, adding that he was was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.

Jajpur

Six persons, including three children and a woman, sustained grievous burn injuries while bursting firecrackers at Byasanagar and Korei in Jajpur district.

Two houses in a slum near Dala overbridge under Byasanagar municipality also caught fire in a firecracker mishap last evening.

Bhadrak

Four children sustained grievous injuries in separate firecrackers mishaps at Jitanaga village under Rural police limits, Saramara village of Bant block and two more villages under Dhamnagar and Basudevpur police limits in Bhadrak district. Condition of three injured deteriorated and they had to be shifted to district headquarters hospital in Bhadrak town, sources added.

Baripada

A massive fire broke out at a tent house godown at Kali Mandir Sahi in Baripada on Sunday evening. Five fire engines were pressed into service to bring the blaze under control. The fire, suspected to have been triggered by a sky lantern, damaged items worth several lakh rupees.
