Kolkata: Notorious for pre-poll and post-poll violence, West Bengal had a relatively smooth ride in the first phase of voting for the Assembly elections on April 23.

On the final day of campaigning, ahead of Wednesday’s second and final phase, the familiar scenes returned.

Videos have surfaced online showing Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mitali Bag’s car being smashed by miscreants at Goghat, in Hooghly district, when she was en route to Arambagh to attend party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s election rally.

Bag was taken to Arambagh Medical College & Hospital, where Abhishek later visited to check gow she was doing.

Bag alleged that her car was attacked by BJP workers, but the saffron party dismissed the claims as “drama”.

In a Facebook Live video, a visibly shocked and emotional Bag claimed that stones were hurled at her car near a BJP candidate’s office, shattering the windows.

The Lok Sabha MP from Arambagh said her vehicle was stopped allegedly by BJP workers carrying sticks, and her car was attacked and vandalised. Bag was in the front seat, and party workers were at the back when the incident occurred, which left her injured as she was struck by broken glass shards.

In the video, Bag is seen sobbing as she recounts the incident and urges the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take responsibility. She highlighted her identity as a Dalit woman, and accused the BJP of targeting her despite its claims of ensuring women’s safety.

Another dastardly attack by BJP goons on Arambagh MP @MitaliBag11. While she was inside her car, BJP thugs led by Goghat BJP candidate Prashant Digar pounced on the vehicle, smashed it up & unleashed violence.

The TMC condemned the attack, saying that the incident reflects BJP’s “true nature” and that voters will respond on April 29. They also questioned how such an attack took place despite the deployment of thousands of central forces.

BJP has gone completely rogue.

The fear of imminent defeat has driven them past the point of political strategy and straight into outright violence, hooliganism, and goondagardi.

The BJP firmly denied the accusations.

Claiming that no such attack took place, party spokesperson Debjit Sarkar alleged that it was TMC workers who were responsible for violence against BJP supporters.

BJP also alleged that their workers were attacked with sticks, bricks and rods during campaigning, leaving several injured.

They accused TMC of staging the incident to divert attention as the ruling party was “losing” the election.

ECI officials said a report had been sought, including CCTV footage and the Facebook Live video.
