Paradip: A cargo vessel caught fire during loading of thermal coal at the IOB berth of Paradip Port in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district late on Saturday.

On spotting dense smoke billowing out of the coal hold of the bulk carrier Eco Colonel Monorvia, the port authorities immediately initiated emergency measures and shifted the vessel to the CQ-2 berth. The remaining coal was safely unloaded to prevent the fire from spreading and firefighters were deployed to contain the flames.

According to port sources, thermal coal usually runs hot and requires watering during loading to avoid spontaneous combustion. The fire is believed to have started because the coal was not sprayed with water while being loaded late last night.

While an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, the vessel remains berthed at CQ-2 pending completion of inspections and clearance from the fire and port safety teams.

Port authorities confirmed that no crew members, dock workers, or emergency responders were injured in the incident.

Authorities are also evaluating the damage and reviewing safety measures to avoid a recurrence. Cargo operations at nearby berths resumed after the situation was declared to be under control.
