New Delhi: There was shock and outrage across the country over a huge pile of cash being allegedly recovered from Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma’s residence.
There were reports of the top court setting up an inquiry against Justice Varma and the Supreme Court Collegium deciding to transfer the senior judge to his parent high court in Allahabad.
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association even wrote to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, opposing the transfer of Justice Varma. In a strongly-worded letter, the bar association stated they were not a ‘trash bin’ and were against corruption, Live Law reported.
However, the Supreme Court said on Friday evening that misinformation and rumours were being spread on the matter, clarifying Justice Varma had not been transferred and that a proposal for the same was under consideration, which was unrelated to the alleged cash discovery
“There is misinformation and rumours being spread with regard to the incident at the residence of Mr Justice Yashwant Varma. The proposal for the transfer of Mr Justice Yashwant Varma, who is the second seniormost judge in the Delhi High Court and a member of the Collegium, to his parent High Court, i.e. the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, where he will be ninth in seniority, is independent and separate from the In-house enquiry procedure,” the Supreme Court said in a statement.
“The proposal was examined by the Collegium comprising of the Chief Justice of India and four seniormost Judges of the Supreme Court on 20th March 2025, and thereafter letters were written to the consultee Judges of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justices of the High Courts concerned and Mr Justice Yashwant Varma. Responses received will be examined and, thereupon, the Collegium will pass a resolution,” the top court added, as per ANI.
