Channi Threat To Women’s Security: Call To Remove Punjab CM On Day Of Swearing-In

New Delhi: Charanjit Singh Channi, sworn in as Punjab’s first Dalit chief minister on Monday, is already facing the heat.

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma launched a no-holds-barred attack on Channi on Monday, saying that he is a threat to women’s safety.

“Today, he has been made Punjab CM by a party that is headed by a woman. It is betrayal. He is a threat to women’s safety,” Sharma told ANI.

Demanding an enquiry against Channi in a #Metoo case in 2018, Sharma added: “He is not worthy to be CM. I urge Sonia Gandhi to remove him from the CM’s post.”

“Allegations were levelled against him (Channi) during #Metoo movement in 2018. The State Women Commission had taken suo moto cognizance of the matter and the chairperson sat on a dharna demanding his removal but nothing happened,” Sharma said.

The three-year-old case is about an inappropriate text message that the Congress leader had sent to a female IAS officer.

After the case resurfaced recently, Punjab Women’s Commission (PWC) chief Manisha Gulati wanted to ensure justice for the lady officer, who has now been transferred out of Punjab.
