New Delhi: An application seeking the removal of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud from the bench hearing petitions related to same-sex marriage was rejected by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Turning down the application, moved by one Anson Thomas, the Chief Justice refused to recuse himself from same-sex marriage hearings.

“Thank you Mr Thomas, application rejected,” said the CJI, according to PTI.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also opposed the application seeking Justice Chandrachud’s recusal from the matter of legalising same-sex marriages.

“I have an objection to this (seeking recusal of CJI), leave it at that my lords… I object, since he has made these submissions,” Mehta said.

A five-judge Constitution bench — comprising the Chief Justice and Justices SK Kaul, SR Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha – began hearing a batch of petitions seeking legalisation of same-sex marriages in India under Special Marriage Act on April 18.

The apex court will continue hearing the case for the 10th day on Thursday.
