Chennai: She is India’s first transgender police officer, and wants to adopt a child.
Prithika Yashini’s application for adoption was rejected last September. But she is not one to give up, and has approached the Madras High Court a second time.
Prithika, who got the job of a sub-inspector in Tamil Nadu after a long-drawn legal battle, approached the Central Adoption Resources Authority (CARA) online, expressing her interest in adopting a child in 2021. But her application was not entertained.
Last year, the high court turned down her petition.
Prithika, currently working as an Assistant Immigration Officer, has moved the high court again, mentioning in her petition that rejection of her application is against fundamental rights provided to a citizen. This is illegal and discriminatory, she added.
Hearing her fresh plea, Justice M Dhandapani questioned why her petition was rejected and issued a notice to Union Ministry of Women & nd Child Development and CARA, asking them to respond by June 30.
Prithika is a trendsetter, her successful fight having paved the way for more transgender women to join the police force in the country.
