New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has reacted strongly to a fake caste-related statement falsely attributed to him on social media.

His office issued a strong clarification on Sunday, calling it a “vile, brazen and mischievous concoction” aimed at damaging the integrity of the judiciary, as reported by The Statesman.

A controversial quote allegedly linked to the CJI went viral on platform X, triggering sharp reactions online. The CJI’s office said the statement was completely fake and had been wrongly circulated through an account identified as @UnreservedMERIT.

The CJI’s office issued an official press release condemning the circulation of the fabricated statement and terming the act a serious attack on constitutional values and public trust in the judiciary.

“The Office of Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India condemns in the strongest possible terms this vile, brazen and mischievous concoction,” the statement said.

“To manufacture a fictitious quote and attribute it to the highest judicial office of the land is an act of rank dishonesty, deliberate social incitement and contempt for constitutional values,” it added.

The fake quote circulating online falsely claimed that the CJI had made remarks related to caste and social communities.

The CJI’s office clarified that no such statement had ever been made by the Chief Justice and warned against spreading fabricated content in his name.

The statement also expressed concern over the increasing misuse of social media platforms to spread misinformation involving constitutional authorities.

Such reckless behaviour on social media directly harms the credibility of judicial institutions and weakens public confidence in the rule of law, the CJI’s office stated.

The spread of false content involving the country’s highest judicial office was unacceptable and dangerous, it said, condemning the irresponsible behaviour.

It urged citizens, media organisations, and social media platforms to avoid sharing or amplifying unverified and fabricated claims.

“The Office of Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India calls upon all responsible citizens, media organisations and social media platforms to refrain from amplifying false and contrived content,” the press release stated.
