Bhubaneswar: A cobra, which had got trapped in a steel mesh in a private residence in the capital city, was rescued on Thursday.
The cobra was spotted by Ajay Mukharjee in the morning when he went to the bathroom of his house in Pokhariput area. Alarmed by the sight of the snake, he immediately come out of the bathroom and raised an alarm.
Hearing Ajay’s shout, his wife Diptimayee Mukharjee rushed to the bathroom where she found that the cobra had inserted its head inside the steel mesh that was covering the drainage outlet. She closed the door of the bathroom and called Snake Helpline.
When Subhendu Mallik, general secretary of Snake Helpline reached the spot, he saw that Diptimayee had pressed the cobra’s head down with a long wooden stick while it was trying to come out underneath the door.
Subhendu opened the door of the bathroom and found the snake trapped in the steel mesh. He caught hold of the 4 ft long Spectacled Cobra, put it in his snake bag and come to his office.
He called two Snake Helpline members to his office to release the snake from the mess. They inserted the cobra’s head into a transparent restraining tube. Then Silka Selony, a member of Snake Helpline, caught hold of the restraining tube to secure the deadly cobra.
Asis Kumar Behera, another member, started cut the steel mesh with a tin cutter plier. After the steel mesh was finally cut into two halves, the cobra was freed of it.
The Snake Helpline members made a health check-up of the cobra and found no external injuries. Then they took it to a suitable natural habitat outside the city and released it there.
“The cobra was trapped in the steel mesh while returning from the bathroom. We are happy that we could release the cobra unharmed,” Mallik said.
It may be noted that a cobra was rescued from a birds’ cage in Bhimtangi in the city on November 7 and another from electricty meter box in Brahmeswarpatna on November 2.
