New Delhi: That refreshing glass of ice-cold water right after lunch or dinner may feel like heaven in this scorching summer, but your stomach could be paying a hidden price.

Many of us have grown up reaching for the chilled bottle straight from the fridge the moment we finish our meal; yet health experts are now flagging this common habit as one that quietly disturbs digestion.

According to Dr Ankit Bansal, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi, drinking very cold water immediately after eating is not outright dangerous for everyone, but it can definitely upset your digestive system over time.

“It slows down the digestion process a bit,” he explains. Several studies and traditional Ayurvedic wisdom back this up — cold water is believed to dampen the digestive fire (agni), making it harder for the body to break down food properly.

As a result, you might end up feeling bloated, gassy, heavy in the stomach, or even deal with acidity and indigestion, especially if you already have sensitive gut issues like GERD. In the heat, when we crave something cool, this habit becomes even more tempting — but it can leave you uncomfortable for hours.

So what should you do instead? Dr Bansal suggests a simple switch: opt for room-temperature or mildly warm water rather than straight-from-the-fridge chill. Better still, wait for 20 to 30 minutes after finishing your meal before sipping anything. This small change allows your digestive juices to work efficiently first, leaving your stomach lighter and happier in the long run.

In our fast-paced lives, tiny habits like this often make the biggest difference to daily comfort and overall gut health. Next time you finish dinner, maybe pause before grabbing that cold glass — your body will thank you with smoother digestion and fewer complaints.
