Birmingham: Weightlifters fetched India its first two medals of the Commonwealth Games 2022 here on Saturday.
After India opened its medal account in the Birmingham Games courtesy of Sanket Mahadev Sargar’s silver in men’s 55 kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 248 kg (113 + 135), Gururaja Poojary won bronze in men’s 61 kg category.
Gururaja managed a total of 269 kg (snatch 118 kg and clean & jerk 151 kg).
His 151 kg in his third attempt in clean & jerk round was a personal best effort.
It was the second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal for Gururaja, who had claimed silver in the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
