Bengaluru: Confident Group founder and chairman C J Roy is suspected to have shot himself dead during an income tax raid at his office in Bengaluru on Friday.
According to Bengaluru police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, IT raids were going on at the office for the last 2-3 days. Roy was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him “dead on arrival”. The body has been sent for post-mortem analysis. Efforts are on to contact his family, who are abroad.
According to The Federal, Roy arrived at his office in the afternoon and was quizzed by the IT department personnel for a while. He provided some documents and then went into his office to fetch more. Soon thereafter, the noise of a shot being fired was heard.
The IT sleuths rushed into his office and took him to the hospital, but it was too late. The police sent forensic teams to the spot of occurrence to collect samples. The weapon from which the shot was fired has also been seized. As of now, the police believe that Roy was alone in the office when the incident occurred.
Roy, originally from Kochi in Kerala, founded the Confident Group in 2005. Over the last two decades, it developed into a well-known real estate and infrastructure developer with projects spanning residential apartments, villas, commercial complexes and mixed-use developments.
The company expanded its presence across Karnataka and other parts of India, building a sizable portfolio and a strong brand in the mid-segment and premium housing markets. Roy was widely regarded as a hands-on entrepreneur who played a central role in shaping the company’s growth strategy and operations, as reported by The New Indian Express.
Roy also produced Malayalam films, including Mohanlal’s big-budget movie Casanova (2012), as reported by NDTV.
The real estate Group was also the title sponsor for a few seasons of the Malayalam TV reality show Bigg Boss Malayalam, hosted by Mohanlal, the channel reported.
News of Roy’s death spread quickly, prompting an outpouring of shock and grief from employees, business associates and members of the real estate fraternity. Several industry figures described him as a driven businessman with a keen eye for opportunities and a strong work ethic. At the company’s offices, staff members were seen in a state of distress as they struggled to come to terms with the sudden loss of their leader.
