Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Saturday declared a complete lockdown in the state from Sunday. The lockdown will remain in force till May 30, a government bulletin said.
What Will Be Closed
During the lockdown period, all schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, government and private offices, shopping complexes, malls, restaurants, salons, gyms and swimming pools will remain closed. Parks and zoos will also remain closed.
Also, all political, entertainment, cultural and religious gatherings will be prohibited.
Metro services, local trains and buses will not ply except for emergency essential service personnel.
Goods carrier won’t be allowed to ply except for medical and food services.
What Will Remain Open
However, retail shops will remain open only from 7 am till 10 am and sweet and meat shops can remain open from 10 am to 5 pm.
Medical shops and optical shops will remain open as usual.
Why Now
The lockdown announcement came a day after Bengal registered its highest single-day spike of 20,846 COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the infected tally to 1,094,802.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Bengal rose to 12,993 after 136 more people, including five eminent doctors, succumbed to the infection on Friday.
