COVID-19: India Sets Grim World Record For Highest Single-Day Cases

New Delhi: A record surge of 78,761 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours took India’s COVID-19 tally past 35 lakh to 3,542,733 on Sunday, the Union Health Ministry said.

This is the highest single-day jump in COVID-19 infections reported by any country since the beginning of the pandemic. The US set the previous record on July 17 with 77,638 daily cases.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of fresh cases.

Besides, 948 new deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported in the country overnight, taking the total number of fatalities to 63,498.

While the number of active cases in the country stood at 7,65,302, about 27 lakh people have recovered so far. The recovery rate stood at 76.6 per cent on Sunday morning.
