New Delhi: The Central government provided financial assistance to over 11,000 transgender persons in the country who lost their livelihood during the lockdowns last year and amid the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.
A total of 899 transgender persons in Odisha benefitted from the government’s one-time measure, with 218 receiving the monetary assistance in 2020 and 681 in 2021.
According to a Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment release, an amount of Rs 1,500 was provided through direct benefit transfer (DBT) to 5,711 transgenders last year and 5,938 persons this year.
As many as 1746 transgenders received assistance in Tamil Nadu, followed by 1390 in West Bengal.
