CoWIN Will Be Able To Handle 10 Million COVID Vaccine Shots Daily: Govt Official

New Delhi: CoWIN, the digital platform being used to conduct India’s massive COVID-19 vaccination drive, has the capacity to handle up to 10 million shots per day.

The government’s target is to vaccinate 300 million people by July-August, a government official told Reuters.

In the first two weeks of what it calls the biggest inoculation campaign, India has vaccinated around 3 million healthcare workers which comes to just about 200,000 per day on average.

The initial glitches in the app, which slowed down the programme, have been rectified, according to the official.

“Big numbers won’t be a problem for us,” said RS Sharma, who heads a government group overseeing CoWIN. “We will be able to do 10 million vaccinations per day.”

He informed that CoWIN uses online and offline systems to register beneficiaries, including through telephone helplines and walk-in centres.

“There will be millions of registrations every day and the system should be able to handle it effortlessly,” he said.

“It’s not a fad,” he said. “It cannot be done without technology.”
