Mumbai: Every entity on this planet has a role and responsibility towards our environment and the ill-effects of climate change.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and title sponsor Tata are doing their bit in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

For every dot ball bowled by bowlers in the playoff stage of the ongoing 2023 edition, the cricket board will plant 500 saplings.

The league stage in the world’s most popular and competitive T20 competition ended on Sunday, with Gujarat Titans (GT), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) qualifying for the business end of the tournament by finishing in the top four, in that precise order.

The first playoff fixture on Tuesday night saw four-time champions CSK beating defending champions GT in Qualifier 1 at Chennai to enter the final. Thanks to 84 dot ball in that game, as many as 42,000 saplings will be planted.

“We are proud to partner @TataCompanies in planting 500 saplings for each dot ball in the @IPL playoffs. Qualifier 1 #GTvsCSK got 42,000 saplings, thanks to 84 dot balls. Who says T20 is a batter’s game? Bowlers it’s all in your hands,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted on Wednesday.

Three more playoff matches remain before the IPL champions of season 16 are crowned. This evening, LSG will face MI in the Eliminator at Chennai, followed by Qualifier 2 between GT and winners of Eliminator at Ahmedabad on May 26 and then the grand finale on May 28.

Whatever be the results of these remaining three matches, environmentalists will root for bowlers, Planting of more and more trees are in their hands.
