Kataka: Cultural activist Dipak Samantarai, the driving force behind the Cuttack Heritage Walk, passed away on Tuesday morning. He was 73.
According to family sources, Samantarai’s health had deteriorated in recent weeks following severe neurological complications. Medical evaluations, including EEG testing, revealed irreversible brain damage with poor prognosis. Following consultations with multiple neurosurgeons and on medical recommendation, his family brought him home to Kataka on Monday to spend his final moments in peace. He passed away at 7 this morning.
In accordance with his final wishes, his body will be donated to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Kataka to support medical education and research, the sources added.
As the key organiser and catalyst behind the Cuttack Heritage Walks, Samantarai regularly led citizens, historians, and tourists through the historic lanes of the Millennium City, highlighting its ancient forts, temples, and shared cultural traditions. He was an ardent advocate for the preservation of Kataka’s famous silver filigree craft. His persistent efforts and advocacy played a vital role in building momentum toward securing the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kataka Tarakasi, ensuring global recognition for local artisans.
Beyond his field activism, Samantarai had a long and distinguished career with All India Radio (AIR), serving as Station Director at various centres, including AIR Kataka.
