Rainwater Floods Sun Temple Premises, Severe Waterlogging In Cuttack

Cuttack/Konark: Following heavy rain since Tuesday night, the premises of the historic Sun Temple at Konark in Puri district was inundated with water.

According to sources, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has started installing water pumps to drain out rainwater from the temple premises.

The ASI had earlier sent an outlay of drainage system estimated to cost Rs 50 lakh for approval to the higher authorities.

In Cuttack, several low-lying areas witnessed extensive waterlogging after rain lashed the city on Wednesday.

Many streets and roads at Badambadi, Cantonment road, Khannagar, Press Chhack and Choudhury Bazaar areas remained flooded with rainwater.

Senior officials of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) visited the affected areas and took stock of the situation.

“As many as 140 water pumps have been pressed into service to remove the rainwater. More high-power water pumps will be installed, if required,” district collector Susant Das informed after a meeting with Barabati-Cuttack MLA Debashish Samantaray and JICA officials.

Meanwhile, locals alleged that the authorities concerned have failed to address the waterlogging issue as the city and adjoining areas face the problem during heavy rain every year owing to faulty drainage system.
