Bhubaneswar: In the wake of a violent clash during Goddess Durga idol immersion in Cuttack, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday expressed sorrow over the incident and appealed to people to maintain peace and order.

Describing Cuttack as a thousand-year-old city, the Chief Minister said the millennium city is a unique example of brotherhood. However, due to some troublemakers, peace has been disturbed in the city and the life of the common people is being disrupted in last few days, he said in a statement.

The Chief Minister further stated that the government is keeping an eye on such troublemakers and strict action will be taken against them as per the law.

To take the history of the city further to the next level, everyone should move forward with peace and order together and keep the glory of the city intact, the Chief Minister has appealed.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate Police on Sunday conducted a flag march as a confidence building measure in Cuttack city, which witnessed violence during Durga idol immersion ceremony late on Friday.

“Situation is back to normal. The flag march is being conducted to instil confidence among the residents about the law and order situation in the city,” said DCP (headquarters) Prakash Chandra Pal.

Six persons, including the DCP, were injured in the clash which erupted at Haathi Pokhari near Dargha Bazar area between 1.30 am and 2 am after locals allegedly objected to certain songs being played during the immersion procession when the idol from Jhanjirmangala Bhagabat Sahi Puja Committee was en route to Devigada for immersion. The argument quickly escalated with stone and glass bottles being pelted from rooftops..
