Guwahati: Following celebrated singer Zubeen Garg’s death on September 19, two postmortems were conducted — first in Singapore where he passed away while swimming and then at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital after his mortal remains were brought back home.

Both postmortem reports have been received, and handed over to Zubeen’s wife Garima Garg, who chose to return those to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) which is investigating the singer’s death.

Even as thousands of Zubeen’s fans, and the entire population of Assam are keen to know what actually caused his demise, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the postmortem reports will not be made public.

Biswa Sarma’s logic is that releasing the reports in public domain could hamper court proceedings, but he added that anyone interested in seeing the report can visit the CID office with prior approval to read it.

The state government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) under the supervision of the CID to probe Zubeen’s death, while the Gauhati high court has formed a judicial commission to monitor the investigation.

Zubeen’s viscera sample has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi to determine whether the singer was poisoned in Singapore, as claimed by a member of his band.

‘Viscera test report to give clear picture’

“We have intensified the investigation under the observation of the Judicial Committee, and the report of the viscera sample test will give us a clear picture about the death,” the chief minister said.

Responding to Sekhar Jyoti Goswami’s allegation of a possible conspiracy, Biswa Sarma said that the former himself is an accused in the case and might be trying to save himself by blaming others.

“He is not a common person but an accused under investigation, so we cannot blindly trust him. We are also examining the poisoning angle, and it will be clear by October 11,” Biswa Sarma said.

Zubeen’s wife Garima wondered why Sekhar Jyoti was silent before his arrest if he knew about the poisoning.
