Berhampur: In another cyber fraud case, a youth was duped of more than Rs 5 lakh in Berhampur of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
As per the complaint filed by the youth at Cyber and Economic Offence police station in the city, he had received a message from an unknown number on WhatsApp on December 5. The sender, introducing herself as Priya, informed him about a part-time job.
The young man was told that he has to review 5-star hotels for which he would be paid Rs 50 per task. After he agreed to the offer, a link was sent to him. He completed the task and received his remuneration. He continued doing the work since December 8.
Then the victim was told to deposit Rs 2,000 to get double the remuneration. He deposited Rs 9,000, Rs 3,800 and Rs 9,800 in the accounts of different organisations separately to get Rs 1.45 lakh as remuneration.
After completion of the task, when the youth tried to withdraw the assured amount from an account, he found it frozen. He was asked by the fraudsters to deposit Rs 2,14,600 to unfreeze the account. But the account remained frozen and he again deposited Rs 2,14,600 in the account of RF Enterprisers.
Despite this, when the account could not be opened, the fraudsters asked the youth to deposit Rs 3,86,280 more or wait for 180 days. Now he realised that he had become a victim of cyber fraud and filed the complaint.
The Cyber police station has registered a case and started investigation.
