Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoological Park and State Botanical Garden, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha’s Khurda district, will remain closed for visitors on October 29 as a precautionary measure in the view of Cyclone Montha, officials informed on Tuesday.
The Zoo has been placed on high alert as Khurda district is likely to experience very heavy rain and strong winds due to the cyclone’s influence. A round-the-clock control room has been established, and all officials and staff have been instructed to stay within the park premises.
Nandankanan authorities have also initiated a comprehensive preparedness plan to ensure the safety of animals, visitors, and park infrastructure. While carnivores and sensitive species have been secured in night shelters, bird enclosures have been covered and reinforced. Adequate feed, medicines, and emergency veterinary supplies, including anti-stress formulations and anti-venom, have been stocked.
Trees have been pruned and power back-up, water, and emergency lighting ensured ensured. Mobile response teams have been stationed across the park.
Mock drills have also been conducted with inspection of emergency gear, such as chain saws and communication devices. The authorities are in close coordination with police, Fire Service, electricity department, and DISCOMs for emergency support.
After the cyclone, activities will involve checking animal well-being, removing uprooted trees, restoring water systems, and clearing debris. The park authorities said further updates will be issued through media and official social platforms, depending on weather developments and the need for additional closures.
