Bhubaneswar: Congress MP from Odisha, Saptagiri Ulaka, has sought Geographical Indication (GI) tag recognition for the state’s iconic culinary and tribal heritage – Chhenagaja, Dahibara Aloodum, Pakhala Bhata, Chhena Jhilli and Koraput Coffee.

The MP raised the matter under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha.

Sharing the submission in a post on X on Friday, Ulaka emphasised that Odisha’s rich culinary heritage and forest-based produce, which represent deep cultural traditions passed down through generations, lack any protection against imitation. He added that such recognition will not only secure livelihoods of local artisans, farmers, and vendors but also help in preserving Odisha’s culture and flavours.

The MP described Chhenagaja as “a timeless Odia sweet” handcrafted by skilled artisans with a distinctive texture and flavour unique to the state. He further stated that Dahibara Aloodum, “Cuttack’s legendary street delicacy and a cultural emotion for Odias”, and Chhena Jhilli, “the pride of Nimapada with its signature melt-in-mouth flavour”, require GI protection to preserve their traditional preparation method and authentic taste.

The MP also drew attention to Sara Papudi, “a traditional sweet with deep roots in rural Odisha”, and Sarsatia, “a rare tribal delicacy made using forest produce”. He argued that GI protection would help preserve their unique recipes and fragile culinary practices that are deeply tied to indigenous knowledge and livelihoods.

Ulaka further underscored Pakhala Bhata, Odisha’s traditional fermented rice dish and a powerful emblem of the state’s food culture, as deserving of GI status to secure its cultural ownership and purity.

He also took up the case of Koraput Coffee, which is grown organically by tribal farmers in the Eastern Ghats. He added that the GI status amid growing global appreciation for its quality, will ensure fair income for producers and stronger branding.

Koraput Coffee currently shares a GI tag with Araku Valley Arabica Coffee.

“These treasures are more than food as those are the legacy of communities, artisans and tribal farmers. Gl recognition will protect authenticity, boost livelihoods and enhance Odisha’s national cultural standing. I urge the Government to initiate a time-bound Gl facilitation process and support local producer groups and tribal cooperatives. Odisha’s flavours and heritage must get the recognition they deserve,” he added.
