Deep Depression: Red Alert Continues In Odisha; IMD Warns Of Flash Flood, Gusty Wind Likely Along Coast

Bhubaneswar: Mayurbhanj district in Odisha may continue to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall as the Deep Depression over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to maintain its intensity till Sunday (September 15) evening.

“The system moved slowly westward with a speed of 8 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 8.30 am over the same region, about 60 km west of Kolkata (West Bengal), 110 km southeast of Bankura (West Bengal), 170 km east of Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) and 270 km east-southeast of Ranchi (Jharkhand). It is likely to move slowly, nearly westwards across Gangetic West Bengal and maintain its intensity of deep depression till evening. Thereafter, it is likely to weaken gradually into a depression and move nearly westwards across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh during subsequent 48 hours,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its midday bulletin.

While red warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may also occur at isolated places in the districts of Keonjhar, Balasore and Sundargarh till Monday morning. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is also likely at isolated places in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khurda, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapada and Jharsuguda.

On September 16, heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue at isolated places in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh and Angul districts.

The weather agency has warned of flash flood amid significant rise in water level of rivers and mudslides/landslides in vulnerable hilly areas during the next 24 hours. Waterlogging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture field is also likely during the next 48 hours. There is also a possibility of damage to unmetalled roads and kutcha houses. Waterlogging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion are also likely in urban areas.

FLASH FLOOD WARNING

The weather agency has warned of low flash flood risk in Balasore, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh districts during the next 24 hours.

WIND WARNING

Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely over north Bay of Bengal and along & off north Odisha coasts till night of September 15. It is likely to become 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph by the evening of September 16 and decrease thereafter.

Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely to prevail over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand & north Odisha till September 15 night, decrease gradually becoming 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph from morning of September 16 and decrease thereafter.

SEA CONDITION

Rough to very rough sea condition is very likely to prevail over north Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coasts till September 15 night. Subsequently, rough sea condition is likely to prevail over north Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coasts from morning of September 16 and improve thereafter. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into north Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha coasts till September 16.
