Bhubaneswar: With the low-pressure area over set to intensify and reach coats around September 23, several parts of Odisha are likely to be battered by heavy to extremely heavy rain over the next one week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The low-pressure area moved west-north-westwards and lay over east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea. It is likely to move west-north-westwards and intensify gradually into a depression over east-central Bay of Bengal on Monday and into a deep depression over west-central Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.

Continuing to move west-north-westwards, it is likely to reach west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near north Andhra Pradesh – South Odisha coasts around September 23 morning.

While thunderstorm and moderate rain will continue till Monday, intensity of downpour will increase from the morning of September 22. The weather agency has issued orange, red and yellow warnings for different districts till the morning of September 27.

On September 22-23, the IMD has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.

On September 23-24, a red warning of heavy to extremely heavy rain has been sounded for the districts of Kandhamala, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri, while orange alert has been issued for Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Khordha, and Nayagada districts.

On September 24-25, the IMD issued a red warning of heavy to extreme rain for the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamala, and Rayagada, while orange warning was sounded Balangir, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri districts.

The weather agency has issued orange and yellow warnings for several districts, mostly in southern and western Odisha, from September 25 to 27.

Under the influence of the system, squally weather is expected over the sea. Wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is very likely over Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 20. It is likely to increase to 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph over East-Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal on September 21, and 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over Central Bay of Bengal and 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over adjoining North and South Bay of Bengal on September 22.

According to the IMD, wind speed is likely to further increase to 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph over West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal on September 23 and will prevail till the evening of September 24. Squally wind with speed reaching 55-65 kmph is likely along and off South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts on September 23 till September 24 evening, while squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off West Bengal and South Andhra Pradesh coasts from September 23 to 24.
this apart, sea condition is very likely to be rough over Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 20, becoming rough to very rough over East-Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal on September 21, over Central Bay of Bengal on September 22, and over West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off North Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coasts till September 24.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into Andaman Sea till September 21, East-Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal from September 20 till September 22, and West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coasts from September 22 till September 24. Fishermen who are already at sea have been advised to return.
