New Delhi: Delhi was placed on high alert after intelligence inputs warned of possible terror attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at key installations across the Capital, India Today TV reported.
Delhi Police and central agencies sprung into action and tightened security from Saturday night. Political and government hubs in central Delhi were under strict surveillance through enhanced patrolling, barricading and thorough vehicle checks as the alert mentions potential threats to the BJP state office, national headquarters and nearby government buildings on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg.
Anti-sabotage checks are also underway at markets, transport hubs and crowded public spaces. Bomb disposal squads, sniffer dog units, quick reaction teams, as well as the Delhi Fire Service are on standby. In vulnerable neighbourhoods, random checks and verification drives are being conducted by local police.
The latest intel alert comes after Delhi Police’s Special Cell busted a Pakistan ISI-linked module tied to gangster and terror operative Shahzad Bhatti in April.
Nine suspects were arrested for allegedly planning attacks on a historic Delhi temple, a popular dhaba on the Delhi-Sonipat highway and a military camp in Hisar, Haryana, PTI reported. A detailed reconnaissance had apparently been carried out, with images and videos sent to handlers in Pakistan. There were indications that the strategy was to target civilian and strategic sites.
Last year, police busted a ‘white-collar terror module’ linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed after the deadly car blast near Red Fort which killed 15 people and injured several others on November 10.
A chilling terror network, allegedly involving radicalised doctors from Al Falah University in Haryana’s Faridabad district, was uncovered. A number of senior doctors, college students and administrative officials were arrested for alleged links with, or providing support to, suicide bomber Dr Umar Un Nabi.
