Berhampur: Police have arrested a dentist from Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district for allegedly duping a jewellery trader of Rs 2 crore on the plea of providing him an apartment in Bhubaneswar.
According to police sources, the accused, Dr D Uttam Kumar of Malasunipeta in Berhampur, is practising as a dental doctor from his Uttam Laser Dental Clinic at Badabazar in the city. In 2010, Dr Kumar along with Dr D Shivaji of Malasunipeta and Sunil Subuddhi of Balugaon had opened real estate firm UMS Developers Pvt Ltd.
In 2018, they contacted jewellery trader K Prasad Rao Subuddhi and his wife K Chhayabati of Gaudasahi in Badabazar and explained to them about different projects of their firm. Dr Kumar told them that he was the project director of the firm and advised them to invest Rs 2 crore in their multi-storey apartment project undergoing in Bhubaneswar.
He assured them of providing flats under the housing project and took more than Rs 2 crore by executing notary affidavits and promissory notes. But Dr Kumar and his associates neither handed over the apartment nor returned the money after several months. When Subuddhi contacted them, they used to turn down their request on some plea of the other.
Finally, K Satish Kumar Subudhi, the son of the trader, filed a complaint at Badabazar police station against Dr Kumar and his associates on October 1, 2021. The police resgistered a case and started investigation.
During inquiry of the case, it was ascertained that Subuddhi’s name was not registered in the project. Since the accused person has failed to render service of handing over any flat and cheated the complainant of Rs 2 crore with deception, the police arrested Dr Kumar and forwarded him to court. Further investigation into the case is on.
