Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea intensified into a depression on Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The system moved west-northwest-wards and concentrated into a depression at 11.30 am over the same region.
It is very likely to move west-north-westwards and intensify into a deep depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours. Continuing to move west-north-westwards, it is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm over Southeast & adjoining areas of Southwest & West-central Bay of Bengal during subsequent 12 hours.
If a cyclone is formed it will be named Murasu (pronounced ‘Murasu’, meaning ‘drum’ in Tamil). The system is expected to reach over West-central Bay of Bengal near Andhra Pradesh coast around evening of November 2.
While thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in different parts of Odisha over the next six days, heavy rain is set to resume in several southern districts from November 2-3 under the impact of the possible cyclonic storm.
On November 3-4, the IMD has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain over the districts of Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam, while a yellow alert has been sounded for Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Puri, and Khordha districts.
On November 4-5, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in some places over the districts of Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam, where IMD has issued an orange warning.
Similarly, a yellow warning of heavy rain has been sounded for Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nawarangpur, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada districts.
Fishermen have advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha Coasts from November 2 to 4 as the IMD has forecast high-velocity wind and rough sea conditions during the period.
