New Delhi: Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri, a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer, was on Friday appointed as the next Foreign Secretary of India.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Misri, Deputy NSA in the National Security Council Secretariat, to the post of Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15,” said the order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
It also approved the curtailment his tenure as the Deputy NSA.
Misri will succeed Vinay Mohan Kwatra, who was given an extension in March this year and is likely to be the next Indian envoy to the US. The envoy’s post in Washington DC has been lying vacant since Taranjit Sandhu retired in January, Hindustan Times reported quoting sources.
Misri has served as private secretary to Prime Ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. With his last ambassadorial posting in Beijing, he is considered an expert on China in the Ministry of External Affairs.
Misri was appointed to the National Security Council Secretariat in January 2022. Jawed Ashraf, India’s ambassador to France, is expected to replace him in the Secretariat. Ashraf has also served as joint secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office under both Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
