Jaunpur: A shocking incident has come to light in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, in which a young man amputated his own foot in a bid to obtain a Person with Disability (PwD) certificate to help him clear the NEET-UG examination under a reserved category.

The man has been identified by the authorities as Suraj Bhaskar (24), a resident of Khalipur under the Line Bazar police station area. The incident occurred on January 18, but the truth came to light only on January 23 after the police launched a thorough probe.

Bhaskar, the police said, had completed a Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) and had been preparing for NEET to pursue an MBBS degree, as per Hindustan Times.
An FIR was initially registered against unknown persons on charges of attempted murder after Suraj claimed he had been attacked and left disabled.

On January 18, the police received information that Bhaskar had been assaulted around noon, circle officer (city);Goldie Gupta said. The youth claimed that he was attacked and after regaining consciousness the following morning, found part of his left foot amputated, with only the heel remaining.

Based on Bhaskar’s statement and written complaint, the police registered an FIR against two unknown persons and launched an investigation into the alleged assault, Gupta said. However, during the course of the probe, investigators noticed inconsistencies in his version of events.

“The victim repeatedly changed his statement and tried to mislead the police,” Gupta claimed, adding that this behaviour deepened suspicion among the investigating team. These inconsistencies promoted the police team to examine the case more closely.

The police obtained Bhaskar’s call detail records. These revealed that he was in a relationship with a woman whom he intended to marry. The police then questioned the woman as part of the probe.

The woman told the police that the youth was determined to secure admission to an MBBS course in 2026 at any cost. He had apparently visited the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in October to obtain necessary disability-related documents, but failed.

It seemed that his foot was cut off cleanly, using a machine and there was no evidence of the use of a weapon. The police officer said that the CDR, BTS, and tower dump of Bhaskar’s mobile phone were checked and it was determined that he was not assaulted. No one even went to see him at midnight, as claimed.

The police team searched the under-construction house and its surroundings, but the severed foot could not be recovered. Some injections were found in the field, which could be related to anaesthesia.

The victim’s pharmacy diploma further deepened the doubt that he knows how to administer injections. Police believe that he first injected himself with anaesthesia to avoid pain and then cut off his foot.

The police also recovered a diary during the investigation. Before starting any task, Bhaskar would set a goal and write it down in his diary. He had even written in his diary about getting admission to MBBS in 2026. He had also filled out a marriage registration form.

After being informed about the incident, the police took Suraj to the district hospital. From there, he was sent to a trauma center for better treatment. The cops added that Suraj’s condition is now stable and his statement will be recorded after he is discharged.
