The government had constituted the Commission under the chairmanship of Justice Biswal, a former judge of the Orissa High Court, as per the provisions of the Odisha State Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993. The Odisha Cabinet had earlier passed a resolution to move the Centre for socio-economic caste survey during the General Census.
Navneeta Rath, Mitali Chinara and Prasanna Kumar Patra also assumed office as members of the Commission along with Biswal.
As per a government release, the Commission will take steps, undertake survey of the social and educational conditions of the people belonging to the Backward Classes in Odisha, which will remove “the historic injustice against social and educational deprivation of various communities of the state”.
“The Commission will also hear other problems concerning interest and welfare of the backward classes. By functioning of the Commission a long pending demand of the backward classes of the State of Odisha has been fulfilled,” the release added.
