Disarming Manipur: Security Forces Seize 77 Weapons in Seven Days

Imphal: The Indian Army and Assam Rifles – in coordination with the Manipur Police and Central Armed Police Forces units – have apprehended six militants and seized 77 weapons, grenades, ammunition and other warlike stores from the hill and valley district of Manipur over seven days till Saturday.

The operations were carried out in the districts of Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Imphal East, Kakching, Jiribam, Kangpokpi and Imphal West.

According to details provided by the Army’s Spear Corps:

April 6: Three double-barrelled rifles, two single-barrelled rifles and ammunition seized from the Karamanga area of Jiribam district. A pistol seized from in the Paraubi area of Imphal East. A Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), a .32 mm pistol, two 12 bore single-barrelled rifles, three .303 rifles, grenades and ammunition seized from Wangoi in Imphal West.

April 7: An AK-47 rifle, two .303 rifles, a 12-bore single-barrelled rifle and ammunition seized in Thangjing Hill, Churachandpur. A .303 Light Machine Gun, an SLR, two 12 bore single-barrelled rifles, two pistols, a tear gas gun and ammunition seized in Sungba. An INSAS rifle, two .22 pistols, one bolt-action rifle, six improvised mortars and ammunition seized from the Boljang area in Kangpokpi.

April 8: An improvised mortar, two country-made single barrelled rifles and ammunition seized at Tatbung village in Jiribam.

April 9: Two carbine machine guns, a .303 rifle, two double barrelled rifles, a single barrelled rifle, a modified 7.62 mm sniper rifle, a modified 9 mm pistol, two Improvised Explosive Devices and ammunition seized from Tokpaching area in Kakching. A 7.62 mm SLR, a modified rifle, a double-barrelled gun, two single bore barrel guns (SBBL), an air gun, two pistols, a modified flare gun and ammunition seized from the Lamsang area in Imphal West.

April 10: A .22 rifle, a single-barrelled rifle and two Pump Action Guns seized from Churachandpur.

April 11: An INSAS rifle, a 12-bore double-barrelled gun, a modified .22 automatic rifle, seven 12-bore bolt action rifles. Two .303 rifles, an IED and ammunition seized from Saiton Khunao, Bishnupur.

April 12: Three country made mortars seized in Siden area of Churachandpur.

“The apprehended cadres of different militant groups and the weapons and ammunition have been handed over to the Manipur Police. Such operations will continue,” a senior official of the Army’s Eastern Command said.
