Bhadrak: Display of three live cobras during a wedding procession at Chhedaka village under Dhamra block of Odisha’s Bhadrak district has raised concern among wildlife lovers.
As per information, the cobras displayed during the procession were later rescued.
The cobras were part of a dance performance where a snake charmer and two performers danced to the tune of popular ‘nagin’ song.
After getting information, a team from the Bhadrak Wildlife Division swing into action and intercepted the wedding procession near Ugratara Chhak on Chandbali Road.
While the three cobras were rescued and placed in separate cages to ensure their safety, no arrest has so far been made in connection with the incident.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bhadrak, Soubhagya Kumar Sahu said a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the details surrounding the incident, and action will be taken under the law.
“We have seized the snakes and are trying to ascertain the identity of the snake charmer. The Special Task Force (STF) has been asked to assist in the probe,” he said.
Use of wild animals in public performances and entertainment is a punishable offence under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
