Puri: A dreaded criminal allegedly involved in several extortion cases was injured in an encounter with the police at Chandanpur, on the outskirts of Puri town, in the early hours of Wednesday.
Identified as Biju Behera of Gokhasahi, the history-sheeter was admitted to a local hospital with an injury in his left leg. He was also allegedly involved in a firing incident at Narendrakona on Tuesday night, police sources said.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Janardhan Padhy, Biju along with Kalia Muduli of Ura village under Chandanpur police limits had gone to the house of Jitendra Kumar Sahu at Narendrakona near ITI College to settle some past deals.
During an angry exchange between the two, Biju attacked Jitendra. His wife Sakuntala, who tried to intervene, was injured in the incident and shifted to a hospital.
Subsequently, four teams of police raided the spot where Biju was holed up. Instead of submitting to the police, he fired on the cops, who retaliated.
A revolver and some bullets were seized from his possession, he added.
