Bhubaneswar: A car allegedly driven by a drunk man, rammed into parked motorcycles and roadside shops at Balakati Market in Bhubaneswar, sparking panic among people in the area.
Eyewitnesses described how the vehicle sped recklessly through the crowded market before crashing, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The impact of the accident was severe with seven motorcycles badly damaged, while several shops and kiosks sustained structural losses. Goods were scattered across the road and local vendors reported heavy financial setbacks as the crash occurred during peak business hours.
Police responded quickly to the incident, detaining the driver on the spot. Authorities later confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. An investigation has been launched to determine the extent of negligence and whether others may have been involved.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents and shopkeepers, who criticised the lack of strict enforcement against drunk driving. Many demanded stronger police patrolling in busy market areas, particularly on weekends when footfall is high.
