Bhubaneswar: Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has become the first hospital/facility in eastern India to be equipped with a state-of-the-art Xenon Chloride Fusion Cardiac Laser Machine which can treat complex heart diseases and reduce use of stents.
KIIT and KISS Founder Dr Achyuta Samanta inaugurated the advanced laser system which will help in performing coronary and peripheral atherectomy, lead management and removal of blockages which are untreatable by conventional angioplasty.
“With this laser machine we can perform ultra-modern treatments that were previously unavailable in this region. This system allows us to offer international-standard cardiac care at KIMS. Patients with complex heart diseases, whether they have arterial blockages or require pacemaker lead removal, will greatly benefit from this technology,” said Dr Anupam Jena, associate professor in Cardiology department.
The machine will be especially beneficial for young cardiac patients.
“This laser system is particularly beneficial for younger patients in their 20s and 30s. It can dissolve clogs and calcium deposits without the need for stents, which often carry their own set of complications. In some cases, stent placement can be avoided altogether, preserving the heart’s natural anatomy and ensuring better long-term outcomes,” Dr Jena added.
Prof. Subasish Mishra, Head of Cardiology department at KIMS, further elaborated on the advantages of the technology.
“This machine allows us to dissolve blood clots and blockages that are resistant to standard procedures. It significantly improves the management of complex coronary diseases and enhances patient care by reducing the risks associated with stents,” said Dr Mishra.
