Guwahati: Congress’s Assam election in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh on Saturday voiced optimism about securing a win in the state Assembly polls, pointing to growing public faith in the party driven by concerns over “corruption” and “mafia raj.”

Speaking to mediapersons, Singh rejected predictions from exit polls, calling them repeatedly off the mark. “There is a very positive sign that we will win this election on the basis of the people’s trust on us. They have various issues like corruption, mafia raj that is running… Exit polls are all wrong, they predicted 400+ seats for BJP in Lok Sabha while in reality, they could not even reach 250 seats,” Singh said, as reported by The Economic Times.

Turning to repolling in West Bengal, Singh fired a broadside at the Election Commission, asserting diminished trust in the institution across the board and charging it with operating in tandem with the BJP government. “Not only among the political parties, but there is also no overall confidence in the ECI. They are working as a part and parcel of the BJP. The former CM is here, and we will monitor the situation here and see that the counting is fair,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel, who is also former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, noted that leaders were convening strategy sessions with candidates and top brass. “Today, there is a meeting with our candidates along with the DK Shivakumar, state leadership here…,” Baghel shared.

He too waved off exit polls as recycled and untrustworthy. “Exit polls are a copy-paste of the one in December and they never turn out to be correct…,” he observed. Regarding West Bengal repolling, Baghel highlighted the party’s proactive oversight. “We have been vigilant from the beginning, and for that very reason, no irregularities could happen…,” he added.

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, speaking in Guwahati, outlined his mission to shield and support Congress MLAs amid counting preparations. “I am here to protect my MLAs, guide the MLAs and help the party. They are safe today and tomorrow.”

Shivakumar and Baghel arrived in Assam to connect with party contenders before the counting of votes on May 4.
