Rourkela: Police have arrested an engineer from Bhubaneswar for allegedly duping a woman of Rourkela of Rs 1 lakh on the pretext of marriage.
According to police sources, the man, identified as Biranchi Narayan Nayak of Angul town, works in a private company in Bhubaneswar after passing out BTech. He had come across the woman of Chhend colony in Rourkela from a matrimonial site.
Biranchi contacted the woman and started chatting with her over phone. Gradually they fell in love and wanted to get married. The woman’s family agreed to the proposal and the date of marriage was fixed on March 3.
The woman’s family also held a ring ceremony for the couple and gave around Rs 1 lakh to Biranchi to purchase the groom’s dress and other materials.
The woman’s family made all preparations on the marriage date and were waiting for the groom’s arrival. When he did not come beyond the schedule time, they contacted him. He reportedly told them that the marriage cannot be performed as his mother had expired.
Not believing Biranchi about his mother’s death, the woman filed a complaint at Chhend police station. During investigation, the police came to know that Biranchi was already married and has a child.
A team from Chhend police station came to Bhubaneswar and with the help of their counterparts in the capital city arrested Biranchi on Saturday. He had promised to marry the woman only to dupe her of money, said police sources.
