Bhubaneswar: Just days after an ailing makhna elephant succumbed to septicemia in Odisha’s Chandaka wildlife sanctuary, another tusker was tranquilised for treatment after it was found with a swelling in its left hind leg on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
According to forest officials of Chandaka wildlife division, the 30-year-old tusker, belonging to a five-member herd, has been diagnosed with hematoma (blood clot) in its leg, probably caused by injury.
“The injured elephant was initially sighted on December 16, prompting teams to start monitoring and tracking it. The animal was located again on December 18 using drones and elephant trackers. Through continuous close observation of its movements, veterinarians from the Centre for Wildlife Health in Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) and Nandankanan Zoological Park, along with experts from London and Canada successfully provided the necessary treatment,” Divisional Forest Officer of Chandaka Reserve Forest, Binod Acharya told ANI.
Following the care, the tusker has shown some improvement and is now able to move partially, he added.
