Dehradun: An entire village was swept away in a mudslide triggered by a cloudburst in the Dharali area, near Harsil in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi on Tuesday afternoon. While one death was confirmed, several others are missing. The Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police have begun a massive rescue operation.
According to the Uttarkashi Police, the cloudburst led to rising water levels of the Kheer Gadh in the Harsil area. The mudslide followed. Scary visuals have started doing the round of houses being swept away with the force of the triggered flood. A video released by the Army shows a river of mud flowing through submerged houses.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over Uttarakhand on Tuesday. The Army said that the mudslide occurred around 1.45 pm.
“A massive mudslide struck #Dharali village in the #KheerGad area near Harsil, triggering sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement. Troops of #Ibexbrigade were immediately mobilised and have reached the affected site to assess the situation and undertake rescue operations. Extent of damage is being ascertained and updates will follow as relief operations unfold. The Army stands resolute in support of our citizens during this natural calamity,” the Army posted on X.
