New Delhi: In a high-stakes intelligence operation, Rajasthan Police detained a former aide of a senior Congress leader on suspicions of espionage for Pakistan’s notorious Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The man, Sakur Khan Mangaliya, currently employed in the state’s employment office, was picked up by a special team from the Rajasthan Intelligence Department on Wednesday from a government facility in Jaisalmer.
Who is Sakur Khan?
Khan, a resident of Jaisalmer district, was previously the personal assistant to Shale Mohammad, a former minister in the Congress-led Rajasthan government. Both Khan and Mohammad hail from the same village, raising political and administrative eyebrows over the former’s close proximity to power.
Surveillance and Alleged ISI Ties
Khan had reportedly been under discreet surveillance for several weeks. Intelligence inputs indicated his frequent contact with a Pakistani Embassy official and suspected links to the ISI. Superintendent of Police Sudhir Chaudhary confirmed the detention, stating that the action was based on leads from “higher headquarters” regarding his suspicious activities and foreign connections.
A senior intelligence source disclosed that multiple unregistered Pakistani numbers were found on Khan’s phone during the preliminary investigation. When questioned, he failed to justify these contacts. Crucially, Khan also admitted to visiting Pakistan 6–7 times over the years, raising serious concerns about the nature and purpose of his travels.
Deleted Data and Financial Scrutiny
While no overtly classified or military-related data was found on Khan’s mobile device, investigators recovered evidence of deleted messages and social media posts, which may hold relevance to the case. Forensic teams are working to retrieve this data for further analysis.
In parallel, Khan’s financial records, including two bank accounts, are under scrutiny for unexplained transactions or possible foreign remittances. Officials suspect that the activity may point to a deeper nexus involving espionage or information leaks.
Political and Security Ramifications
The incident is especially sensitive given Khan’s political background and proximity to a former state minister. While there is no current evidence suggesting Shale Mohammad’s involvement, the connection has created ripples within Rajasthan’s political corridors.
As of now, Khan is being shifted to the Central Investigation Centre in Jaipur, where he will face detailed interrogation under national security laws. Intelligence agencies are also expected to coordinate with central investigative bodies, including the Intelligence Bureau and RAW, for a deeper probe.
Next Steps
Sources confirmed that his travel history, digital footprint, and possible links to diplomatic personnel will form the backbone of the continuing investigation. If espionage charges are confirmed, Khan could face prosecution under the Official Secrets Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
