Bhubaneswar: Already battered by downpour, Odisha is likely to experience extremely heavy to very heavy rain during the next few days due to a low-pressure area in the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that the low-pressure now lay over southwest Gangetic West Bengal neighbourhood. The associated cyclonic circulation extended up to 7.6 km above mean sea level titling southwestwards with height. It is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh during next two days.
The IMD has issued red, orange, and yellow warnings for multiple districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next three days.
The weather agency issued a red warning for Nuapada, Bargarh and Balangir districts up to the morning of Tuesday. Extremely heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over these districts during the period.
Similarly, orange warning was issued for several other districts. Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.
The weather agency also issued yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for the districts of Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurdha, Gajapati, and Ganjam during the period.
On July 8-9, orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for the districts of Bargarh, Balangir, and Nuapada.
Likewise, heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur districts where yellow warning was issued.
Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati.
On July 9-10, heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
