New Delhi: The protesting farmers have called for a countrywide ‘chakka jam’ (road blockade) on February 6.
It’s not a daylong bandh, but a temporary road blockade.
The blockade will take place in and around Delhi, mainly the National Capital Region, which comprises parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Why this blockade?
It’s in response to the recent Union Budget, which the unions say has ignored demands of farmers, and also the internet ban imposed by the Centre at various protest sites.
Will it have any effect on the rest of the country?
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 40 farmer unions which has called the ‘chakka jam’, expect response in eastern states like West Bengal and some southern states.
Timing of blockade
It is expected to be a three-hour blockade from 12 noon to 3 pm on roads and highways. According to Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, drivers of vehicles which will stop during the chakka jam will be given water and food.
Security arrangements
This being the protesting farmers’ first major programme since the R-Day tractor rally, Delhi Police is gearing up for possible miscreants like those who stormed the Red Fort and unfurled a religious flag on January 26. Security arrangements have been strengthened at all border points in Delhi. Multi-layer barricades have been set up at the Ghazipur border and barbed wires put up at different points.
