Jeypore: A fast track court has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years for rape of a minor girl in Odisha’s Koraput district.
As per the case, Abraham Harijan alias Abhi of Surali village under Kotpad police station in the district had established a relationship with the minor girl of his village in 2017. Promising to marry her, Abhi took the girl from her house on July 20, 2017.
Abhi took the girl to his relatives’ houses in Papan and Dharnapal villages in Raipur of Chhattisgarh and raped her for several days.
Later, the girl’s father filed a complaint against Abhi at Kotpad police station. Following investigation, police arrested 29-year-old Abhi and forwarded him to court.
The Special Fast Track Court at Jeypore heard the case after the police filed the chargesheet. Ad Hoc Additional District and Sessions Judge Prangya Nalini Mishra of the court announced the verdict after hearing 13 witnesses and verifying 15 evidences produced by the police.
The court convicted Abhi for rape of minor girl and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 10 years. The court imposed a penalty of Rs 23,000 on the convict. Failing to pay the penalty, the convict has to undergo RI for 9 more months, the court ruled.
The court also directed the district legal services authority to pay a compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the family of the victim.
