Berhampur: A man died by suicide after allegedly killing his wife at Saranuapalli village under Bellaguntha police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district late on Monday.
According to sources, Chitrasen Nayak and Puja Nayak had a love marriage seven years back. They are parents to two children. However, financial difficulties strained the family. About six months ago, Puja moved to Bhubaneswar with her two children and her mother to work as a daily wage labourer and support the household. At her husband’s request for assistance with banking-related work, she returned alone to the village from her parental home in nearby Tanarada village on Sunday (April 5).
A heated quarrel erupted between the couple on the night of April 6. In a fit of rage, Chitrasen allegedly attacked Puja with a sharp cutting object (paniki or vegetable cutter), inflicting multiple injuries, leading to her death. He then reportedly left the house and hanged himself from a tree roughly 200 meters away.
When Puja failed to respond to calls on Tuesday morning, her brother became suspicious, visited the house, and found her lying in a pool of blood. The house was also in disarray with belongings scattered. He alerted villagers and the police.
Bellaguntha police, along with SDPO Deepak Kumar Mishra, reached the spot and seized both the bodies. An investigation is underway, focusing on the circumstances of the marital discord and the sequence of events.
More details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses.
