Bhubaneswar: In a landmark achievement for urban development, Odisha has emerged as the No. 1 state in India under the AMRUT 2.0 mission, the flagship programme of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs aimed at transforming water supply, sewerage, and urban infrastructure across the country.
The state’s Housing & Urban Development Department announced the ranking, highlighting strong execution, timely project delivery, expanded tap water services, operational treatment plants, and significantly improved systems across cities.
Under AMRUT 2.0, Odisha has sanctioned 345 projects worth over ₹4,030 crore across 89 ULBs. Of these, 99 projects have already been completed, demonstrating remarkable pace and efficiency. The impact on the ground is tangible: Piped drinking water supply has reached over 2.7 lakh households. As many as 147 water body and plantation projects led by women SHGs have been restored, enhancing sustainability. New water treatment capacity of 43 MLD (million liters per day) has been created, directly benefiting nearly 2.83 lakh citizens. Overall, improved water access has touched more than 5 lakh urban residents, with near-total fund utilisation, the department said.
“Securing the top rank under AMRUT 2.0 reflects Odisha’s focused approach towards ensuring reliable water access and stronger urban infrastructure. Our priority is clear— every household should have access to safe water, every city should have efficient systems and every ULB should be Empowered to deliver better services. We will continue to build cities that are resilient, inclusive and future-ready, aligned with the vision of a Viksit Odisha,” said Housing & Urban Development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra.
