Sundargarh: Unidentified miscreants allegedly opened fire outside the residence of businessman Sanjay Nanda in Odisha’s Sundargarh town late Saturday night, raising concerns over possible coal mafia rivalries.
According to sources, two men arrived in a car at Nanda’s house on Mission Road and demanded to meet him. Security guards turned them away, after which the men left. Around 2:30 am, one of the suspects returned on a motorcycle and fired multiple rounds toward the house before fleeing.
Sources further stated that no injuries were reported, as the security guards escaped unhurt.
On being informed about the firing incident, Sundargarh Town police reached the spot and seized the bullet shells. CCTV footage has helped them identify the suspects and the vehicles involved, a car used in the initial visit and a motorcycle for the firing. A manhunt is underway to apprehend the culprits.
Nanda is the owner of Maa Tarini transport.
It is being suspected that the attack could have resulted from a business rivalry related to coal transportation in areas under Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). The business had earlier reportedly received death threats, leading to the arrest of a youth, the sources added.
