New Delhi: Two Bangladesh Army soldiers died and a commissioned officer was critically wounded when a tank burst into flames during a live-firing drill at the Hathazari Field Firing Range, Chattogram, here on Wednesday.
The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said the mishap took place while the crew was conducting routine firing practice. The two troopers inside the turret were killed on the spot. The injured officer was shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka for specialised care.
Chinese-Origin Tank Involved
The vehicle caught in the blast was a Chinese-origin Type 59 main battle tank, a workhorse of Bangladesh’s armoured corps for decades. The exact trigger — whether an ammunition cook-off, mechanical failure or handling error—was not immediately clear, as reported by India Today.
Inquiry Ordered
The ISPR said an official probe has been ordered to establish the cause and fix responsibility. “Necessary steps are underway to determine the cause of the accident,” the military’s media wing said in a brief statement.
